Massive pine half slab with slate and leather mountains, wood aspen and copper sun

bringing the rocky mountains home

A Slice of the Rocky Mountains

Several years ago, the forest service cut thousands of trees for fire mitigation in the national forest that abuts our property. We acquired a permit to pick up some of those trees for firewood. In the large piles of wood, was this huge half slab from a very old tree. I grabbed it up knowing that it would be a fantastic statement piece in some capacity. A few years later, inspiration struck and A Slice of the Rocky Mountains is the result.

The massive sanded slab retains several of the original saw cuts which form two mountain peaks. A beautiful piece of black slate serves as the furthest mountain peak while numerous shades and textures of hand cut leathers form the remaining peaks. The foothill in the front is a multi-dyed leather that reflects the colors of fall in the Rockies.

A grove of wood aspen trees painted with numerous watercolor washes stands sentinel in the foreground. Peeking through the grove is a hand sculpted stylized copper sun.

This substantial piece is the perfect adornment to any large mantle or entry table. A Slice of the Rocky Mountains brings the beauty, ruggedness and raw organic nature of the Colorado Rockies into your home.
