Facade

made by hand in the colorado mountains

Facade

I found this beautiful twisted branch during an afternoon walk in our woods. I always collect kindling to get the morning fire going. Sometimes I come across something much more. This lovely piece of wood is distinct and beautiful with its form and texture.

As I looked at the wood, I thought that many people would find it interesting while others would find it unremarkable. While I considered how it would evolve as a piece, I began to think about how people view themselves in a similar way. The wood is stunning and interesting on its own, but maybe that wasn’t enough. As I looked though my leather stack for just the right color and texture, it reminded me of how people cover themselves both literally and figuratively. Trying to get attention. Trying to blend in. Becoming credible. Becoming likable. Male. Female. Non-binary. Welcoming interaction and rebuffing it.

Applying the touches to their facade.

The wood is collected from our forest, cleaned and finished with several coats of matte protectant. Hand cut segments of leather are affixed with metal rivets.
